The Wimbledon men`s and women`s singles finals are set to be broadcast live on a channel rivaling the BBC, a notable change after decades of BBC exclusivity.
In May 2024, Eurosport signed a five-year extension with the All England Club. This agreement notably granted them the rights to broadcast the men`s and women`s singles finals.
The deal also provided the broadcaster with a daily 90-minute package of highlights from the tournament at SW19.
However, Eurosport ceased broadcasting in February this year following its acquisition by TNT Sports.
Consequently, TNT Sports has inherited these broadcasting rights and will air the Wimbledon finals for the first time in its history.
The BBC will continue as Wimbledon`s primary domestic broadcaster, maintaining its coverage which spans 88 years.
Both the BBC`s and TNT Sports` broadcasting agreements are with the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC).
According to Ofcom`s Listed Events regulations, major sporting tournaments can have “secondary broadcasters.”
TNT Sports will operate under this “secondary broadcaster” status at Wimbledon, through its agreement with the AELTC.
This year, the Wimbledon tournament is scheduled from Monday, June 30 to Sunday, July 13.
Andy Murray, the two-time champion at SW19, might return as a BBC pundit after concluding a six-month coaching period with Novak Djokovic.
The grass-court tournament continues to hold a prominent position in the BBC`s sports broadcasting lineup.
However, securing these rights reportedly costs the BBC approximately £60 million annually.
Carlos Alcaraz aims for a third consecutive Wimbledon title, having defeated Novak Djokovic in the previous two finals.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic will seek his eighth title at the All-England Club, which would equal Roger Federer`s record.
World number one Jannik Sinner will look to recover from his French Open final disappointment and mount a strong challenge at Wimbledon.
Wimbledon, the world`s oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament, was first held in 1877.
The BBC has broadcast Wimbledon since 1937, initially showing up to half an hour of matches from Centre Court daily.
This year, the BBC will offer extensive coverage of Wimbledon across BBC1 and BBC2, with all matches available on iPlayer, alongside radio, online, and app coverage.
Approximately 38 tons of strawberries and 10,000 litres of cream are consumed during the tournament annually.
It is the only Grand Slam event played on grass, with the courts precisely maintained at a height of 8mm throughout the tournament.
