For 31 years, Wayne Gretzky was celebrated as the NHL`s top goal scorer, a record considered almost impossible to beat. That was until Alex Ovechkin embarked on his journey and achieved this historic feat just last weekend.
Back in 2016, when Sportsnet`s Elliotte Friedman questioned Ovechkin about potentially surpassing Gretzky`s record, Ovechkin dismissed the idea.
Friedman probed, `Catching Gretzky is impossible?`
`It`s impossible,` Ovechkin responded definitively.
Friedman pressed further, `You could challenge him, you might actually be able to do it—`
`No,` Ovechkin interrupted. `I would need to score 50 goals for six more seasons, and I`m not sure I`ll even be skating in six seasons.`
