TORONTO — Ridly Greig, already infamous among Leafs fans for a previous empty-net goal incident, wasted no time in reigniting his role as Toronto`s most disliked player. It took him just 26 minutes in the latest game to remind everyone why.
Greig, a third-line player known for his effectiveness and playing on the edge, was highly noticeable for the Ottawa Senators during Sunday`s Battle of Ontario game.
In his first playoff game, Greig contributed a goal, participated in both special teams, and was one of the few Senators with a positive plus/minus in Toronto`s dominant 6-2 victory.
However, it was Greig`s contentious actions, specifically a cross-check, that sparked anger from Maple Leafs players and their supporters, though it escaped further NHL disciplinary action.
Greig delivered a forceful cross-check to John Tavares` head away from the main action. Initially penalized with a major, it was reduced to a minor penalty after review.
Coach Craig Berube commented that the league would not provide additional suspension, stating, “No, I didn’t think they would.”
