Sports news ยป USMNT Midfielder Johnny Cardoso Undergoes Ankle Surgery, Misses World Cup

Johnny Cardoso, a prominent midfielder for the USMNT, has suffered a significant setback and will be unable to participate in the upcoming World Cup. The injury occurred during a training session last week, initially diagnosed as a sprain that was expected to sideline him for approximately a month.

However, further medical evaluation revealed the sprain to be more severe than initially believed. Atletico Madrid confirmed that Cardoso requires immediate ankle surgery. Reports suggest that the surgery is necessary due to complications affecting his arteries, and he is expected to be out of action for around two months. This timeline indicates he should be fit for preseason training with Atletico Madrid for the next campaign.

Cardoso, 24, has earned 23 caps for the USMNT, though his international career has been somewhat inconsistent due to recurring injuries. He missed key matches during the Gold Cup last summer and his recent involvement with the national team has been limited, with his last appearance prior to March being in the previous June.

His first season at Atletico Madrid has been challenging, marred by injuries throughout the campaign. He managed only 30 appearances in his debut season with the club. While he showed signs of regaining his form in March and April, another injury has now derailed his season and dashed his World Cup hopes.
