Featherweight contender Giga Chikadze faced an early challenge ahead of UFC Kansas City, missing weight for his scheduled bout. This setback occurred during the official weigh-ins held on Friday for the event taking place in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday.
Chikadze weighed in at 147 pounds, which is one pound over the non-title featherweight limit of 146 pounds (including the one-pound allowance). His opponent, David Onama, successfully made weight at 146 pounds.
Despite the weight miss, officials confirmed that the fight between Chikadze and Onama will still proceed. It will now take place as a catchweight bout, with Chikadze forfeiting 20 percent of his fight purse as a penalty.
On the rest of the main card, the top fighters successfully made weight without issue. Welterweight headliners Ian Machado Garry weighed in at 171 pounds, and Carlos Prates hit 170 pounds. Garry is set to compete after his recent loss, while Prates looks to continue his impressive run in the UFC.
In the co-main event, veteran light heavyweight Anthony Smith and his opponent Zhang Mingyang both successfully made weight, coming in at 206 pounds each.
