The official weigh-ins for UFC 316 saw one fighter significantly miss weight, while the athletes competing for championships successfully hit their marks.
Flyweight veteran Ariane da Silva weighed in at 132 pounds on Friday morning, which is six pounds over the non-title limit for her 125-pound bout against Wang Cong. Weight allowances typically grant an extra pound, but da Silva`s miss was far beyond that. Her opponent, Wang Cong, successfully made the flyweight limit, weighing in at 125 pounds.
Sources familiar with the negotiations confirmed that despite the significant weight discrepancy, the fight between da Silva and Wang is still expected to proceed as a catchweight bout. As a penalty for missing weight, da Silva will reportedly forfeit 30 percent of her purse.
In contrast to the flyweight situation, the weigh-ins for Saturday`s two championship fights went smoothly, with all four competitors making weight successfully.
Men`s bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili weighed in slightly under the championship limit at 134 pounds. His opponent, Sean O`Malley, came in at the limit of 135 pounds for their highly anticipated rematch. Dvalishvili previously defeated O`Malley at UFC 306 to capture the title and successfully defended it against Umar Nurmagomedov earlier this year. Dvalishvili is currently on an impressive 12-fight winning streak.
In the women`s bantamweight division, champion Julianna Peña weighed in at 135 pounds for her first title defense of her second reign. The notable story in this bout was the challenger, Kayla Harrison, also hitting the 135-pound mark. Harrison, a two-time PFL tournament champion, previously competed at 145 pounds and had never weighed less than 136 pounds in her 19 professional fights. She had no issues making the bantamweight limit on Friday and is now officially set for her first UFC title opportunity.
Aside from Ariane da Silva, all other fighters on the UFC 316 card successfully made weight without incident.
UFC 316 is scheduled to take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday.
