Chicago Blackhawks defenseman TJ Brodie has successfully cleared waivers, a move that grants the team the flexibility to potentially buy out his contract. This development was confirmed on Sunday.
The 35-year-old blueliner had previously agreed to a two-year contract worth $7.5 million with the Blackhawks during the free agency period last off-season.
Should the Blackhawks proceed with a buyout, financial projections from PuckPedia indicate a significant cap hit of $3.23 million for the 2025-26 season. This figure would decrease substantially to just $258,000 for the following 2026-27 season.
In his 54 appearances last season, Brodie contributed two goals and tallied 10 points, while averaging slightly over 15-and-a-half minutes of ice time per game.
Over his extensive 15-season career in the NHL, which includes tenures with the Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, and now the Blackhawks, the Chatham, Ontario, native has registered 58 goals and accumulated 358 points across 962 career games.
The window for NHL teams to execute player buyouts is currently open and will remain so until June 30th.
