Pending unrestricted free agent John Tavares stated on Tuesday that he feels `optimistic` regarding the likelihood of signing a new contract to continue playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Speaking with reporters during the team`s end-of-season media availability, which took place two days after their playoff elimination by the Florida Panthers, the former captain mentioned having productive conversations about his future with General Manager Brad Treliving and Head Coach Craig Berube.
“I`m very optimistic that it can work out where I`m back,” he commented.
Tavares has consistently made his position clear about wanting to remain with his hometown club. Immediately following the season-ending Game 7 loss on Sunday night, he expressed that the opportunity to play for Toronto has “meant everything” to him. When directly asked if he wished to return, Tavares replied, “Yes.”
He elaborated on these sentiments on Tuesday, describing his time in Toronto as “unbelievable” and conveying his strong desire to be a part of the team`s future success.
The 2024-25 season marked a period of notable change for Tavares within the Maple Leafs organization. After serving as captain for five years, the captaincy was transferred from his jersey to Auston Matthews.
