Forward Matthew Knies` availability for the decisive Game 7 remains uncertain.
The Toronto Maple Leafs successfully extended their second-round playoff series against the Florida Panthers by securing a victory in Game 6 on Friday night.
However, the post-game update from head coach Craig Berube cast a shadow of doubt, as he could not confirm definitively whether Knies would be able to participate in Sunday`s contest.
Berube stated, “He`s dealing with something that occurred here, and we need to assess him and see how he feels tomorrow. We`ll take it day by day.”
When asked about the specific nature of Knies` injury, Berube indicated the team was not yet aware. He reiterated his uncertainty regarding the player`s readiness for Game 7, saying he “wouldn`t know that question right now.”
Knies appeared visibly uncomfortable throughout Friday`s game, particularly after an awkward collision with Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola during the first period.
Despite remaining on the bench, the 23-year-old forward`s ice time was significantly limited to just 13:01, considerably less than his playoff average of 20:11.
Addressing the reduced minutes, Berube explained it was based on “situational” factors and ongoing conversations with Knies, acknowledging the player was “clearly not at his best.”
“I utilized him more in specific game situations as the game progressed,” Berube added. “Whether he was fully capable or not, it was more about me communicating with him on the bench to understand his condition at that moment.”
Knies has been a productive player for the Maple Leafs during these playoffs, contributing five goals and two assists in 12 games.
Game 7 between Toronto and Florida is scheduled for Sunday evening.
