The New Jersey Devils experienced a tough night.
Following the Devils` 3-2 defeat by the Ottawa Senators, head coach Sheldon Keefe strongly criticized his team`s performance, singling out one player.
Defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic stated to reporters post-game that he believes the team requires a playoff mindset as they approach the season`s end. Keefe clearly disagreed with both Kovacevic`s assessment and his play on Saturday.
`Kovacevic simply needs to perform better. That would be beneficial,` Keefe responded when questioned about the defenseman`s remarks.
The press conference concluded immediately after.
With a narrow lead in the Metropolitan Division for third place, Keefe`s Devils have struggled recently, with only 4 wins in their last 10 games. Kovacevic, who signed a five-year, $20-million extension on March 7, has generally been a reliable defender throughout the season, but has a negative plus/minus over the last five games.
The 27-year-old has been playing in a top-four role due to Dougie Hamilton`s injury. This season, Kovacevic has contributed a goal and 16 assists, while being tied for the best on the team in plus/minus.
With 13 regular season games remaining, perhaps Keefe`s comments will serve as motivation for Kovacevic and the entire team to improve their on-ice performance.
