Eric Staal is stepping into a new role within hockey management.
The Buffalo Sabres announced Wednesday that the veteran NHL forward has been named special assistant to General Manager Kevyn Adams.
Staal, aged 40, officially concluded his playing career last summer, signing a one-day contract with the Carolina Hurricanes before retiring.
Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Staal joins a Sabres organization facing a significant challenge, having missed the playoffs for an NHL-record 14 consecutive seasons.
As I looked for ways to enhance our existing staff, I wanted to add somebody to our group that has a fresh perspective and the direct experience of winning at all levels of hockey. Eric was one of the first people I thought of when I originally became general manager, so it is fitting that he is the first addition to our organization this off-season. He has done it all as a player and I know his experience and knowledge will be invaluable to our team as we look to take the next step.
— Kevyn Adams, Buffalo Sabres General Manager
Staal and Adams share a history, having played together for the Hurricanes in the early 2000s, including their 2006 Stanley Cup victory. Adams later brought Staal to Buffalo via a trade from the Minnesota Wild in 2020 during his tenure as GM.
Staal`s distinguished playing career includes six NHL All-Star selections.
