COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Ryan Warsofsky will be the head coach for the United States at the upcoming IIHF men’s world hockey championship.
USA Hockey announced on Friday that the San Jose Sharks coach will lead the team at the world championships for the first time in his coaching career. In 2023, Warsofsky was an assistant coach under David Quinn, and he also worked with Quinn for two seasons with the Sharks before taking over as head coach.
“Ryan is a very talented young coach,” said Jeff Kealty, the general manager of the U.S. men`s national team. “He has a great connection with players and is an excellent choice to lead our team at the world championship as we aim to win the gold medal.”
At 37 years old, Warsofsky is currently the youngest head coach in the NHL and could potentially coach players older than himself at the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from May 9-25 in Herning, Denmark, and Stockholm, Sweden. The U.S. team will play their preliminary games in Herning.
The United States has not won a gold medal at this tournament since 1960 — over 27 years before Warsofsky was born.
