Ryan Bader is once again a free agent in the world of fighting.

The former Bellator heavyweight champion has amicably ended his contract with the PFL, even though he had one fight remaining. His last appearance with the promotion was in February 2024, where he was defeated by Renan Ferreira. This was his only fight under the PFL banner.

Sources familiar with the situation confirmed this news. It was initially reported by Ariel Helwani.

After his fight with Ferreira in 2024, Bader ventured into acting, securing a role in the film The Smashing Machine alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The movie is based on the life of UFC and PRIDE veteran Mark Kerr.

Following the completion of filming, Bader mentioned that he still had one fight left on his PFL contract but was uncertain about his return to fighting. Now, having separated from PFL, Bader is a free agent and can explore opportunities with other promotions.

Bader shared a statement on social media regarding his departure from PFL.

“Officially a free agent,” Bader stated. “PFL and my team reached mutually agreeable terms despite having one fight left on my contract. My time with Bellator was incredible, a fantastic experience with great people running the organization. I’m open to various opportunities in the fight world. The Smashing Machine movie is coming out soon, making this an exciting year. Thanks to Mike Kogan for always treating fighters with respect, which is rare in this industry, and to Scott Coker and the rest of the Bellator team for the great times. And thanks to David Martin for leading the way.”

Over the past few years, Bader successfully transitioned to heavyweight, achieving a 6-1 record with one no-contest in eight fights. His sole defeat was against Ferreira, but he secured victories against notable fighters like Cheick Kongo, Valentin Moldavsky, and PRIDE legend Fedor Emelianenko.

Bader also has a significant history in the light heavyweight division, where he competed for most of his UFC career. However, he has previously indicated that he does not intend to return to 205 pounds and will likely remain at heavyweight.

His next destination is currently unknown, but Bader is now free to sign with any promotion after his release from the PFL.
