Sports news » Roy Jones Jr. criticizes Zuffa Boxing, fears it will ‘kill the history of boxing’

Boxing icon Roy Jones Jr. voiced significant concerns during a recent interview regarding Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing venture, expressing fears that it could fundamentally alter and potentially damage the sport’s historical integrity.

Jones Jr. expressed frustration over what he perceives as a move that could centralize power and limit fighter opportunities. His primary objection centers on potential changes to the Muhammad Ali Act, legislation intended to protect boxers’ rights and prevent monopolistic practices within the sport.

Roy Jones Jr. slams Zuffa Boxing’s influence

According to Jones Jr., allowing Zuffa Boxing unchecked influence is akin to giving significant power to an entity that might prioritize its own interests over those of the fighters. He likened the situation to fortifying a building only to then hand the keys to someone with a history of questionable practices. Speaking with Fight Hub TV, Jones Jr. stated:

“You have to appease them to get a fight. Many people don’t grasp the true implications of what’s happening. They fail to understand. By the time they realize, it will be too late. Are we going to sacrifice boxing’s legacy to emulate the UFC?”

A key point of contention for Jones Jr. is the potential impact on fighter compensation. He highlighted the disparity where UFC fighters might earn more in a single boxing match than throughout their entire MMA careers. Jones Jr. argued that introducing the UFC’s pay structure into boxing would significantly reduce earnings for boxers, who have historically commanded higher purses. He emphasized his reluctance to endorse a system that he believes has negatively affected fighters in another discipline.

Jones Jr. further elaborated on his concerns, painting a grim picture of a future where a single organization wields excessive control. He believes this could lead to fighters losing their bargaining power and their identities being dictated by the promotion. He warned that any fighter who displects those in power could see their opportunities for championship fights vanish. He predicted that if sanctioning bodies lose their authority, prestigious titles from organizations like the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO could become meaningless, effectively erasing decades of boxing history. The competitive framework of boxing, developed over generations, could be irrevocably transformed.

Zuffa Boxing is in its early stages, having already promoted significant bouts such as Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford and planning future events with fighters like Jai Opetaia. While Dana White holds considerable influence in MMA, boxing operates under established rules and with established sanctioning bodies. Whether Zuffa can significantly alter this landscape remains uncertain, but Roy Jones Jr. is clear in his belief that the fight to preserve boxing’s independence has already commenced.
