Real Madrid clinched a crucial derby victory against Atletico, heading into the international break with three vital points.
In the opening half-hour, Alvaro Arbeloa’s side created several dangerous opportunities: Dani Carvajal’s shot was saved by Juan Musso, and Fede Valverde struck the post. Atletico largely defended but managed to break the deadlock. Following Matteo Ruggeri’s excellent cross, Giuliano Simeone skillfully back-heeled the ball to Ademola Lookman, and the Nigerian striker, making his derby debut, accurately found the net.
Atletico successfully contained Real’s attacks for most of the first half, but seven minutes into the second half, the “Los Blancos” equalized. David Hancko fouled Brahim Diaz inside the penalty area, allowing Vinicius Junior to convert from the spot.
Moments later, Fede Valverde put Real ahead 2-1. Jose Maria Gimenez, who replaced Robin Le Normand at halftime, inadvertently gifted the ball to the Uruguayan midfielder, who flawlessly continued his goal-scoring form. However, Real’s lead was short-lived: Atletico dramatically leveled the score with Nahuel Molina’s spectacular long-range strike that flew precisely into the top corner of Andriy Lunin’s net.
Real was not to be denied, and in the 72nd minute, they took the lead once again. Trent Alexander-Arnold passed the ball to Vinicius, who cut in from the left wing and fired accurately into the far corner, completing his brace. This secured the victory for the hosts, although the end of the match was tense: Valverde was sent off for lashing out at Atletico substitute Alex Baena.
Real Madrid maintains title challenge against Barcelona
This result means Real Madrid will be four points behind Barcelona in the La Liga title race heading into the final stretch of the season. Arbeloa’s team remains in contention, though they will need favorable results in the remaining nine matchdays.
