It’s an immense challenge to overcome the doubts when trying to reopen communication that has been dormant for years, especially with someone who was once pivotal in your life. Connie delves into her past, a journey that quickly intertwines with that of her former best friend, Beth. As we fill a scrapbook with analog memories – photographs, bus tickets, museum passes, magazine clippings, stickers, among others – we discover how their relationship was forged, how Connie and Beth became inseparable, and what events led that seemingly unbreakable friendship to yield to distance.
Pieced Together manages to make each chapter and every blank page a captivating experience. This is due both to the small tactile mechanics we perform with virtual desktop objects — like using a brush to dust, scissors to cut, or a pen to answer questions — and to the rich variety of situations Connie and Beth experienced. They shared everything from study hours to trips abroad, cultural and social activities, disappointments, first crushes… in short, everything one would expect from a deep teenage friendship.
The narrative hooks us from the start with an authenticity that transcends any artificiality. While we don’t know if the game’s creators infused personal experiences, it’s easy to perceive a strong dose of truth in their story. Connie finds companionship in Beth, and their personalities perfectly complement each other precisely because of their differences, finding in the other a space to develop their interests. The evolution of their relationship is so credible that we inevitably become distressed when we see how the inability to face a difficult conversation threatens to unravel everything they’ve built.
At this juncture, when the threat becomes apparent, Pieced Together transcends its role as a relaxing game of collecting memories and colorful stickers — a collectible that, by the way, integrates beautifully and allows for nods to other indies like Toem or Minami Lane — to become a tense countdown towards the inevitable. From our adult perspective, it’s easy to trivialize adolescent dilemmas, but they were not trivial at the time. It’s easy to empathize with Connie and her fear of ruining everything when communicating her future decision to Beth. It’s a heartbreaking situation, as we know that her reluctance to speak will only exacerbate the damage.
There are other crucial turning points in Connie and Beth’s story that invite active exploration. Pieced Together’s effectiveness lies in how its robust narrative is complemented by the player’s direct interactions, using scissors and glue. While we’ve already highlighted the variety that makes the gameplay engaging, even more remarkable is its ability to surprise, such as by recreating a visit to the Paris catacombs in the scrapbook or by presenting an ingenious puzzle based on Connie’s schedule.
Without spoiling the ending, which I find magnificent, the game presents a series of decisions in its second half that, while not directly altering events, lend significant weight each time we turn a page in the scrapbook and notice that certain essential conversations still haven’t happened. Just as the scrapbook’s surface imposes limits on placing elements — an excellent detail that allows everything to adapt to the page’s fold — an intimate relationship like true friendship cannot flourish without a solid foundation of trust, which is tested in both good times and challenging ones.
Another notable aspect of Pieced Together is its grounding in a technologically evolving world, reflected both in the creation of the memory scrapbook and in the lives of its characters. Credibly, the final chapters incorporate elements like portable printers and the increasing influence of social media, making the resolution of certain chronological puzzles more complex than in the initial stages. From start to finish, every element functions cohesively, impeccably serving to convey the story Glowfrog Games aimed to tell.
Pieced Together’s conclusion can be profoundly impactful. What was once a vibrant friendship, full of joy and color, becomes an almost imperceptible, forgotten bond. Although the affection doesn’t disappear, it finds less and less room to breathe, and even the strongest flame extinguishes if conditions don’t allow it to keep burning. The final chapter is powerful, capable of stirring deep emotions within the player. It’s heartbreaking to read Connie writing to Beth that she simply didn’t notice how the time between their messages gradually grew until it became a definitive end. This reality is devastating in itself, but even more so for being so raw that it transforms what seems wholesome into something terrifying.
Fortunately, Pieced Together teaches us that not all endings are absolute. If we desire it, we can try to reopen a door that has been closed for a long time, hoping that this vital relationship is like a cactus friendship: resilient, capable of recovering and illuminating our present. Especially once we have learned to value and nurture it properly. However, it is crucial to approach this attempt with the same delicacy as Connie, and, above all, with the courage to emotionally expose oneself to whatever the future may hold. Not all outcomes are happy, but for a genuine friendship, it is worth trying everything.
