The Pittsburgh Penguins have formalized adding forward Melvin Fernstrom to their organization.

The team announced on Friday that the 19-year-old forward has signed a standard three-year, entry-level contract.

Fernstrom was originally acquired by the Penguins from the Vancouver Canucks in January. This transaction was part of the trade package that sent players Marcus Pettersson and Drew O`Connor to the West Coast team.

As a right-shot winger, Fernstrom spent the 2024-25 season competing in Sweden, splitting time between Örebro HK in the top-tier Swedish Hockey League and their J20 Nationell squad.

During his 48 games with the senior Örebro HK team, Fernstrom scored eight goals and accumulated 17 points. His performance earned him the SHL`s Rookie of the Year award, as he led all first-year players in goals, assists, and total points.

Prior to joining the Penguins organization via trade, Fernstrom was originally a third-round selection by the Canucks in the 2024 NHL Draft.
