EDMONTON — Despite a slight setback, the Edmonton Oilers are seeing positive developments regarding their injured players. This update comes as Calvin Pickard is nominated for the Masterton Trophy, recognizing perseverance and dedication.
Here`s a look at the Oilers` injury situation as they prepare for their next game.
Injury Update
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will miss tonight`s game against the St. Louis Blues due to illness, meaning Edmonton is currently without their top three centers.
However, the majority of injured Oilers participated in the morning skate. Coach Kris Knoblauch remains optimistic, stating that Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Mattias Ekholm, and goalie Stuart Skinner are all on track to return before the playoffs. Skinner is even expected to start on Friday against San Jose.
“We anticipate having everyone back before the regular season concludes,” Knoblauch stated, suggesting returns could be within the next couple of games or in the final two games of the season.
Trent Frederic (high ankle sprain) did not skate on Wednesday. His availability will be reassessed following a doctor`s appointment and further updates from Knoblauch.
With Noah Philp recalled from Bakersfield, the projected Oilers lines for tonight are as follows:
Podkolzin-Philp-Arvidsson
Hyman-Henrique-Perry
Skinner-Janmark-Brown
Jones-Kapanen
Walman-Bouchard
Nurse-Stecher
Kulak-Emberson
Pickard
Rodrigue
Pickard`s Perseverance Recognized
Calvin Pickard has been named the Edmonton Oilers` nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, in a vote by the Edmonton chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.
Pickard`s journey is a testament to perseverance. At 32, he`s achieving his first 20-win season, having played for seven different organizations and waited until last spring for his first NHL playoff game. He might see more action this postseason, depending on Skinner`s form.
“I`ve worked hard for a long time, going back and forth from the minors for years,” Pickard said. “I received a great opportunity here last year to come up, and it’s been an incredible experience. I cherish every day.”
Pickard, originally from Winnipeg, expresses a deep appreciation for his current position. Having spent considerable time in the minor leagues, he values the opportunity to play in the NHL.
“Every day, I’m excited to come to the rink. I’m proud to be in the NHL. Many aspire to be in my position, and I don’t take it lightly,” he affirmed. “Initially signed as a No. 3 goalie, I never lost faith in my ability to play at this level. I got the chance, and it’s been positive so far.”
