Edmonton Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman has indicated that discussions surrounding a potential contract extension for superstar captain Connor McDavid will be initiated and driven by the player himself.
While the Oilers are eligible to offer McDavid an extension starting July 1, with just one year left on his existing deal before becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer, Bowman emphasized patience.
Bowman stated that securing McDavid is the team`s absolute top priority. However, he will respect the timing that the three-time Hart Trophy winner feels is appropriate.
“Certainly we’re eager to meet with him whenever he wants, but also understanding that he just went through a very tough ending to the season,” Bowman explained during his media availability on Friday. “Timing-wise, Connor’s gonna drive that process, but there`s no question, he`s a pivotal player on our team, and not just what he does on the ice, but his leadership.”
He added, “I`ve had a chance to work with him now this year, and I`ve been just so impressed with how things you guys probably don`t see, but what kind of a teammate he is and and he`s incredibly important to our group, and you know, whenever he`s ready, we`re going to dive into that.”
