The Edmonton Oilers experienced another setback on Thursday, losing a key forward.
Already missing Leon Draisaitl, captain Connor McDavid sustained a lower-body injury during the game against the Winnipeg Jets and was sidelined for the remainder of the game.
The injury seemed to occur in the final moments of the second period.
While pursuing the puck in Winnipeg’s zone, Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey made contact with McDavid, appearing to catch him with his stick around the mid-section.
McDavid immediately showed signs of discomfort. He remained on the bench for the rest of the second period but did not return for the third and was quickly ruled out.
Following the game, head coach Kris Knoblauch informed reporters that he had no update on McDavid’s condition.
Draisaitl was initially listed as doubtful and ultimately couldn’t play due to an undisclosed injury from Tuesday’s game against Utah.
Losing McDavid for any significant time would be a major blow to the Oilers, who are currently second in the Pacific Division with 84 points and are trying to overtake the Vegas Golden Knights (86 points) for the top spot.
Despite what is considered a less productive year by his standards, McDavid has still achieved remarkable numbers with 89 points (26 goals, 63 assists) in 62 games. He also scored the winning goal in overtime for Canada against the U.S. in the 4 Nations Face-Off final.
Edmonton’s next game is scheduled for Saturday at home against the Seattle Kraken, followed by a three-day break.
