With only a week and a half remaining in the NHL regular season, attention is starting to turn towards the playoffs.

However, before the playoffs begin, it`s important to reflect on the season and recognize the outstanding individual performances we`ve witnessed over the past seven months. This season has seen numerous tightly contested award races, with a wealth of world-class talent delivering exceptional performances.

Let`s examine the frontrunners for five major NHL awards:

Hart Trophy

Awarded to the league`s most valuable player, as voted by the Professional Hockey Writers` Association

Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche

Why he could win: Nathan MacKinnon has been exceptional this season. Following a 140-point season, he is currently among the league`s top scorers with 115 points in 78 games. He also leads the league in even-strength points. MacKinnon is the driving force behind the Colorado Avalanche, demonstrating leadership and dominance that is crucial to their success. His consistent high-level play has been especially vital in a season where Colorado faced a slow start, roster adjustments, and numerous injuries. Despite these challenges, the Avalanche are nearing 100 points and have already secured a playoff spot.

Leon Draisaitl, Edmonton Oilers

Why he could win: Leon Draisaitl has consistently proven his dominance in Edmonton. Despite playing alongside another top scorer, Draisaitl has distinguished himself this season, particularly with Connor McDavid`s offensive output slightly reduced due to injuries. Draisaitl, at 29 years old, is having one of his best seasons, leading the Oilers. His 52 goals make him a strong contender for the Rocket Richard Trophy, and he leads the league in even-strength goals (36), power-play goals (16), overtime goals (six), and game-winning goals (11). His playmaking ability is also evident with 106 points, ranking him third in league scoring. In a season of ups and downs for the Oilers, Draisaitl has been indispensable.
