Ken Morrow, who serves as the director of pro scouting for the New York Islanders, is quite familiar with extraordinary moments in hockey.
Witnessing the Islanders clinch the NHL draft lottery on Monday was another memorable instance for Morrow. The victory allowed them to jump over nine other teams in the draft order, earning the privilege of the top selection in the 2025 draft. Morrow is a celebrated figure, having won the Stanley Cup four times and being a member of the iconic 1980 “Miracle on Ice” U.S. Olympic team.
“Throughout my hockey life, I`ve experienced many exciting things, but this ranks right at the very top,” Morrow stated. “It feels like the hockey gods were smiling upon us. I can`t express how thrilled I am for our fans, our ownership, and the entire Islanders organization.”
The Islanders had a challenging season, missing the playoffs for the second time in the last four years. The team is also undergoing significant changes in its management, following the decision not to extend general manager Lou Lamoriello`s contract on April 22. Their lottery win was particularly astonishing, as they entered the day with only a 3.5 percent probability – the 10th-best odds – of winning the first overall pick.
