The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday, with Brock Nelson scoring the decisive goal in the fourth round. This victory came despite a remarkable third-period comeback attempt by Montreal.

Charlie Coyle of Colorado also scored in the shootout, while Patrik Laine was Montreal`s only successful shooter.

In regulation time, Nelson contributed a goal and an assist. Additional goals for Colorado were scored by Martin Necas, Sam Malinski, and Ryan Lindgren. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 25 saves.

Montreal`s offense surged in the third period with Joshua Roy and Juraj Slafkovsky scoring just 30 seconds apart. Slafkovsky`s goal was his second of the game. Christian Dvorak then tied the game at 4-4 at 13:32, energizing the crowd at the Bell Centre.
