Jack Della Maddalena Explains Disappointed Reaction During Islam Makhachev Fight
Jack Della Maddalena has finally clarified the true reason behind his visibly disappointed expression during his championship bout against Islam Makhachev. Last year, "JDM" claimed the 170-pound championship by defeating Makhachev’s training partner and friend, Belal Muhammad. This victory prompted Makhachev to vacate his lightweight title and move up to the welterweight division.
However, Della Maddalena's reign at welterweight was short-lived. He was dethroned by Makhachev in the Russian fighter's welterweight debut at UFC 322, just a few months after winning the title.
During their encounter, the Dagestani wrestling maestro, Makhachev, showcased overwhelming dominance against "JDM." He secured a unanimous decision victory, logging an impressive control time of 19:10 minutes, executing four takedowns, and landing a total of 140 strikes.
In the later championship rounds, Della Maddalena's crestfallen expression was evident, leading commentators and fans to speculate about a possible injury hindering his ability to defend takedowns or regain his feet. His coach even urged "JDM" before the final round to "take that sad look off his face" and fight with full intensity to avoid losing the title.
In a recent interview, Jack Della Maddalena admitted that his disappointment stemmed from his own perceived underperformance at UFC 322. He felt unable to execute his desired game plan, which contributed to his dejected appearance in the later rounds. He stated: "It was just a bit of disappointment for not being able to do what I wanted to do, knowing I was having a poor performance. I look back on it and there's things I should've been doing more of."
Jack Della Maddalena Aims to "Outclass" His Next Opponent
Jack Della Maddalena is eager for a rematch with Islam Makhachev to reclaim the title he lost at UFC 322. To secure another shot at the championship, "JDM" must first overcome knockout artist Carlos Prates at UFC Perth on May 2. Della Maddalena expressed confidence in his abilities, believing he has the skillset to "outclass" "The Nightmare." He commented: "He’s [Carlos Prates] a fan favorite for good reason. He’s an exciting guy. Good striking battle against two of the top contenders. I feel like I’ve got the skillset to beat him. I feel like I can outclass him."
