Dustin Poirier: UFC Stymied My Zuffa Boxing Plans with Nate Diaz

UFC veteran Dustin Poirier recently revealed that his aspiration to make his professional boxing debut against Nate Diaz under the Zuffa Boxing banner was rejected by the UFC. Poirier believes that the promotion is hesitant to allow any UFC-contracted fighters to participate in Zuffa Boxing events.

The Louisiana native, who announced his retirement last year after a unanimous decision loss to Max Holloway, continues to serve as a desk analyst for the UFC. Despite his retirement, "The Diamond" remains under contract and has expressed interest in a potential rematch with Justin Gaethje or a boxing match with Nate Diaz.

A matchup between Poirier and Diaz has been a long-standing point of discussion, initially slated for UFC 230 in 2018 before Poirier withdrew due to injury. Although both fighters have repeatedly shown interest over the years, the bout never materialized in the octagon.

Nate Diaz exited the UFC in 2022 following a submission victory against Tony Ferguson. He subsequently transitioned to professional boxing, where he faced Jake Paul (suffering a loss) and later secured a win over former UFC opponent Jorge Masvidal. Diaz is now set to return to MMA against Mike Perry on a different promotion's card, fueling rumors about his future relationship with the UFC.

Poirier Explains Why UFC Blocked Zuffa Boxing Crossover

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience, Dustin Poirier shared his ambition to compete in professional boxing at least twice. However, he indicated that a potential boxing bout against Nate Diaz under Zuffa Boxing is unlikely, citing the UFC's underlying reasons.

Poirier explained, "I always wanted to box. I am still under contract with the UFC. I already pitched it to them. Me and Nate Diaz in Zuffa boxing, let’s go… But they don’t want any crossover." He elaborated that the UFC likely wants Zuffa Boxing to be perceived as a serious, legitimate boxing organization. Opening the door for MMA fighters to compete there, Poirier speculated, could create a precedent where every fighter on the UFC roster might seek similar opportunities, potentially leading to disorganization and compromising Zuffa Boxing's professional image within the boxing world.

Beyond the promotional strategy, Poirier also conveyed his personal excitement for a dedicated boxing training camp. He highlighted the appeal of focusing exclusively on running, conditioning, and boxing, without the demands of grappling or wrestling. "It would be smooth sailing; I love it. I only have to box. Honestly, training camp striking and sparring are my favorite days," he remarked, emphasizing his passion for the sport's stand-up discipline.
