The BKFC bantamweight division has recently undergone a significant change, with champion Justin Ibarrola voluntarily relinquishing his title. This decision renders the 135-pound belt officially vacant.

BKFC promoter David Feldman announced the news on The Bare Knuckle Show, clarifying that Ibarrola’s choice stemmed from a personal feeling of not being ready for the full responsibilities associated with being a champion at this stage in his career.

Feldman elaborated: "We had a talk with Justin Ibarrola. He just thought as though he wasn’t ready to be a champion now. He’s not ready for that. He wants to pursue some other things... He's going to actually relinquish his championship. So, he’s going to vacate his championship. We’re not taking it from him." Feldman also emphasized that Ibarrola’s recent participation in a boxing event outside BKFC was not a factor in this decision. He added, "He just said he wasn’t matured and ready enough to take on the role and the responsibility of being a world champion for BKFC."

Despite the change in title status, Feldman expressed continued respect and support for Ibarrola's future within the organization.

"Listen, man, we really like Justin Ibarrola. He’s been a part of growing this thing in South Florida. Nothing but respect... We wish him the best," Feldman stated. He confirmed that Ibarrola would continue to fight under the BKFC banner, but not as champion, as his desire to explore other opportunities and "bounce around a little bit" is not compatible with the commitments of a reigning titleholder.

Ibarrola’s Perspective and the Race for the Vacant Title

Justin Ibarrola himself confirmed Feldman’s account, stating his reason for vacating the title was simply: "Just moving around. Still fighting for BKFC but can’t move around as I want as their champion."

With the bantamweight championship now open, BKFC has swiftly moved to schedule a contest to crown a new champion. Former WBO super featherweight champion Jamel Herring is set to face ex-UFC flyweight Nate Maness at BKFC 89 on May 22nd in Palm Desert, California. Herring will be looking to add a bare-knuckle title to his distinguished boxing career, while Maness aims to capture his first championship within the organization.
