There are reports suggesting that Croatian football legend Luka Modrić could make an unexpected return to Real Madrid this summer. The 40-year-old midfielder is reportedly considering leaving AC Milan after just one season with the Italian club.
Last summer, Modrić was not offered a new contract by Real Madrid following the Club World Cup, which led him to join AC Milan on a free transfer. He quickly became a regular starter under coach Max Allegri, impressing in Serie A with his skill and consistent form. Modrić started most of his 35 appearances and was instrumental in Milan’s pursuit of a Champions League spot for the following season. However, a fractured cheekbone sidelined him in the crucial final stages of the season, and AC Milan ultimately missed out on Champions League qualification, being overtaken by Juventus on the final day.
Luka Modrić May Retire After the World Cup
Modrić is expected to be fit for the upcoming World Cup, where he will captain Croatia in the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, Italian media outlets have been circulating rumors that he might announce his retirement after the competition concludes this summer. Prior to the dismissals of Allegri and Sporting Director Igli Tare, Modrić had reportedly been offered a one-year contract extension by AC Milan, a proposal that he has since deferred.
Is a Return to Real Madrid This Summer Possible for Modrić?
According to reports from Diario AS, Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez had previously stated that the door would “always be open” for Modrić’s return, regardless of the capacity. Given the uncertainty surrounding his potential retirement, the exact nature of his next steps remains unclear, whether it be as a coach, advisor, ambassador, or sporting director. Nonetheless, Real Madrid is reportedly eager to welcome Modrić back into the club in some capacity.
Furthermore, it has already been reported that Real Madrid is exploring the possibility of bringing back former midfield partner Toni Kroos to serve as an advisor. Kroos would reportedly have input on transfer decisions and matters within the dressing room.
