Josh Emmett, the only UFC fighter to last five rounds with Ilia Topuria, offers a unique perspective on the former featherweight champion`s move to the 155-pound division.
Topuria`s sole lightweight appearance in the UFC was in 2022 against Jai Herbert, a short-notice bout. While Topuria secured a knockout and a Performance of the Night bonus, he faced early difficulties and was hurt by Herbert`s strikes.
Despite Topuria`s subsequent improvements, Emmett, having competed at lightweight himself, emphasizes the significance of size in the UFC.
“I think bigger lightweights could pose problems for him,” Emmett commented, noting Topuria`s smaller frame. “He’s not a large guy. I believe I was either taller or the same height, but with a much bigger build.”
Topuria has consistently overcome size disadvantages in his UFC career, maintaining an undefeated record with numerous decisive finishes.
In his last two fights, Topuria delivered knockout victories against Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway, both considered among the greatest featherweights. He now aims for similar success in the lightweight division.
“He is incredibly well-rounded and technically skilled,” Emmett acknowledged. “He has a background in jiu-jitsu and wrestling but has excelled with his striking. His boxing is very precise, and he has power. I anticipate he will perform well.”
“However, I am interested to see how he fares against the top lightweights. It will be telling to see how he matches up against those with significantly larger frames,” Emmett added.
Emmett believes Topuria is likely preparing effectively to compete in the heavier weight class.
“Considering the preparation time, especially if he has several months unlike the short notice Herbert fight, and with his strong team and resources, I’m confident they will ensure he is well-prepared,” Emmett stated.
Emmett is focused on his own career, aiming to re-enter title contention.
After a period of recovery in 2024, Emmett is eager to demonstrate an improved version of himself.
“Many questioned my inactivity, assuming I was undamaged. However, there were underlying issues known to my inner circle. `Emmett 2.0` is here, representing a return to full strength. I was not at my best in past significant fights. Now at 100 percent, I aim to make an impact.”
