Despite their public exchanges, Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall appear to be united on one key aspect: they are holding off on any official announcements about their potential heavyweight title unification fight, deferring instead to the UFC.
Jones, who is currently in Thailand filming a reality show, spoke about the timing of the highly anticipated matchup during a recent seminar. He suggested that significant developments are happening behind the scenes.
“The UFC, I and Tom, we all got a lot of stuff happening behind the scenes,” Jones told attendees. “They’re one of the biggest organizations in sports and right now Tom and I have agreed to wait for the UFC to make their announcements. So I legally can’t really talk about it.”
Aspinall recently mirrored this sentiment. After initially teasing potential news on social media, he later clarified that he does not announce his own fights, leaving that responsibility entirely to the promotion.
Frustration has been growing among fans and media in recent weeks due to the lack of concrete information regarding the potential bout, fueled by ongoing public back-and-forth between Jones and Aspinall.
UFC CEO Dana White has consistently guaranteed that the fight will eventually be made. However, Aspinall has openly expressed his frustration regarding his extended period of inactivity, particularly noting that his last win was in July 2024.
While Jones` latest statement doesn`t provide a specific date or timeline, it does confirm that active discussions are occurring with the UFC and acknowledges that the fight against Aspinall is widely recognized as the desired matchup.
