Joe Rogan, a seasoned observer of mixed martial arts, expressed his astonishment at an incident during UFC 314, deeming it exceptionally controversial.
The final preliminary match featured featherweights Dan Ige and Sean Woodson in what appeared to be a closely contested bout. However, the fight`s trajectory was abruptly altered by referee Andrew Glenn`s intervention in the third round.
In the third round, Ige gained an advantageous position over Woodson, leading Woodson to attempt a takedown. As Woodson grasped Ige`s leg, Ige responded with a series of hammer fists. Despite the ongoing struggle between the fighters, referee Glenn stepped in and halted the match.
From the commentary booth, Rogan immediately voiced his disapproval of Glenn`s decision.
“That`s unbelievable,” Rogan exclaimed. “That`s a poor stoppage. Really bad. I cannot comprehend that decision.”
“That was an awful stoppage,” he reiterated. “Truly one of the most egregious stoppages I have ever seen. You must allow a fighter the opportunity to recover. He was absorbing some short blows while effectively defending himself.”
Daniel Cormier, also providing commentary, conveyed his sympathy for Woodson`s situation.
“Consider this: this fighter was potentially on the verge of breaking into the rankings next week,” Cormier pointed out. “Now, he not only faces a loss but also a reduction in his earnings. Furthermore, I`m curious about the scorecards leading up to the stoppage, because if he was ahead on points, this referee`s decision is even more detrimental.”
Official scorecards later revealed that Ige was indeed ahead, but the controversial stoppage eliminated any possibility of Woodson mounting a comeback.
