Recent dramatic developments could significantly influence Barcelona’s upcoming presidential election. While Joan Laporta remains the overwhelming favorite for re-election, allegations from club legend Xavi Hernandez might bolster challenger Victor Font’s position.
In a bombshell interview released over the weekend, Xavi claimed his dismissal in the summer of 2024 was not Laporta’s decision but rather that of his advisor, Alejandro Echevarría, whom Xavi accused of secretly controlling the club.
During a presidential debate, Laporta took the opportunity to directly address Xavi’s accusations. He vehemently denied them and provided multiple reasons to justify his decision to part ways with the coach.
Laporta expressed his hurt by Xavi’s statements, linking them to Hansi Flick’s current success. He emphasized the difficulty of making tough presidential decisions, explaining that he believed keeping Xavi would have led to continued losses. Laporta then highlighted the positive turnaround, stating, “The same players who lost with Xavi, now win with Flick.”
Laporta further lamented that individuals, including those close to him like Echevarría and Rafa Yuste, were seemingly manipulated to undermine him, defending Xavi even when his continued tenure was deemed indefensible. He then accused Xavi of attempting to cause turmoil, suggesting Victor Font was orchestrating these actions to tarnish the electoral process. Laporta criticized this “style” as dishonest and undesirable, mentioning a complaint full of “lies and falsehoods” filed by a member, which he believes is tied to Font.
Laporta Briefly Touches on Xavi’s Messi Claims
Laporta also dismissed Xavi’s assertion that he had rejected the opportunity to re-sign Lionel Messi in 2023, denying it was due to concerns over a power struggle or their reportedly strained relationship.
Laporta clarified that the club plans to erect a statue of Messi and host a tribute match once the stadium is completed. He explained that after Messi could not be renewed for financial reasons, Xavi conveyed Messi’s desire to return in March 2023. However, Jorge Messi later informed him in May that the pressure of a return would be too immense, and they ultimately opted for Inter Miami.
