Barcelona shot-stopper Joan Garcia has unequivocally downplayed claims of interest from Newcastle United last summer, prior to his contentious transfer from city rivals Espanyol. Several Premier League teams, including the Magpies, were reportedly keen on Garcia before the Blaugrana triggered his €25 million release clause.
Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s crucial Champions League Round of 16 first-leg clash against Newcastle at St. James’ Park, Garcia expressed optimism about his team’s recent improvements and form.
“We’re approaching this game with immense enthusiasm,” Garcia stated, “knowing there’s a second leg to come, but we anticipate they’ll come out with everything they’ve got. We must learn from our Copa del Rey match against Atletico, where we paid the price for what happened in the first leg.”
He added, “We’ve definitely taken a significant step forward in recent games; our pressing is better, and we’re more structured. We capitalized on the two long weeks to train effectively. After the 4-0 defeat to Atletico, I asserted that we would learn from our errors, and as a young squad, we’ve truly grasped that lesson.”
Garcia Skirts Barcelona Election Discussions
The press conference took place after a heated election debate between presidential hopefuls Victor Font and Joan Laporta, during which Xavi Hernandez’s explosive allegations about Laporta sabotaging Lionel Messi’s return to the club were a major talking point. Garcia, however, skillfully sidestepped the political discussions.
“It doesn’t impact us at all; our sole focus is on the upcoming match,” he remarked. When questioned about the potential departure of Director of Football Deco, a promise from Font if he wins the election, Garcia replied, “Neither I nor my teammates have considered that; we’re entirely concentrated on the task at hand.”
Previous Encounter with Newcastle Offers an Advantage
Having faced Newcastle previously in the Champions League group stage, Garcia views this prior experience as a distinct advantage. During their initial encounter, he made several crucial saves, contributing significantly to Barcelona’s 2-1 victory, which saw Marcus Rashford net a brace.
“It’s beneficial to have played here before to familiarize ourselves with both the opponent and the stadium,” he acknowledged. “However, we know they’ll start with high intensity, and we’ll need to be extremely vigilant.”
He reiterated, “Playing here previously certainly helps, but we must maintain our focus and match their rapid tempo. They rely heavily on pressing and their physicality. We managed to do that during our 2-1 win, but we need to replicate and enhance what we didn’t execute perfectly on that day.”
“I Knew What I Wanted” – Joan Garcia on Choosing Barcelona
When directly asked about the reported interest from Newcastle last summer, Garcia firmly rejected the notion that a move to the Premier League club was ever a serious possibility for him.
“Much was discussed over the summer, but the moment Barcelona’s name emerged, I instantly knew my desired path,” Garcia explained. When further probed if Newcastle had made any calls thereafter, he simply replied, “No. I am extremely content at Barça.”
The Catalan giants are scheduled to face Newcastle at 21:00 CEST on Tuesday, aiming to secure a favorable result to carry back to Camp Nou for the second leg. They enter the match on a strong run of four consecutive victories since their significant loss to Atletico.
