Chaz Lucius, the Winnipeg Jets` first-round draft choice in 2021, has announced his retirement from hockey. This decision comes after his recent diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS).
In a public statement, Lucius explained that EDS is a hereditary condition affecting connective tissue, which is crucial for stabilizing and supporting joints and organs throughout the body.
“Over the past few years, I`ve struggled with recurring joint injuries and their recovery, often attributing it to bad luck,” Lucius stated.
He continued, “With the EDS diagnosis, it`s now clear that my body, affected by EDS, cannot withstand the physical demands of professional hockey. Given this condition, my history of injuries, and the inherently physical nature of hockey, medical professionals have advised me to retire from the sport.”
The 21-year-old player, originally from Lawrence, Kansas, has spent the last two seasons playing for the Manitoba Moose, the Jets` American Hockey League affiliate.
In the 2024-25 season, Lucius recorded nine points, including three goals and six assists, in 25 games for the Moose. His last game was on February 9th.
The Winnipeg Jets organization released a statement expressing their full support for Lucius`s decision: “After extensive discussions and consultations with Chaz, his representatives, and medical experts, the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club fully supports his difficult decision to retire. Chaz’s condition and challenges with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome expose him to a high risk of injury if he continues to play professionally, and we respect his choice.”
Prior to joining the professional ranks, Lucius played college hockey for the University of Minnesota in the 2021-22 season, achieving 19 points in 24 games. He also played junior hockey for the Portland Winterhawks in the Western Hockey League in 2022-23.
Internationally, Lucius represented the U.S. at the 2023 World Junior Championship, contributing seven points to the American team`s bronze medal victory.
Looking ahead, Lucius expressed his intention to become an advocate for individuals living with EDS.
