James Lilley’s aspirations for the BKFC UK featherweight title were put on hold after Gary Fox withdrew from their scheduled bout this week. Consequently, Lilley will now compete in a heavier weight class. The highly anticipated fight with Fox carried significant importance, with Lilley having previously commented on its potential.
Lilley had noted that his fight against Fox would likely have headlined any other fight card. However, he acknowledged that former heavyweight champion Mick Terrill, being from Newcastle, was an undeniable choice for the main event on this particular card.
A Historic Opportunity Lost for James Lilley
Lilley was also on the verge of making history, aiming to join an elite group of fighters who have secured championships in both BKFC and BKB promotions – a feat previously achieved by Mick Terrill.
Reflecting on his victory against Scott McHugh at BKB 21, Lilley had expressed his profound desire for a BKFC title, viewing it as the ultimate culmination of his career in bare-knuckle combat.
He noted his numerous title challenges across MMA, boxing, and bare-knuckle promotions (BKB and BKFC), with only the BKB title secured so far. Lilley emphasized his intense dedication to obtaining the BKFC belt, viewing it as the ultimate validation for two decades of hard work. For Lilley, this championship represented more than fame or money; it was about achieving a significant milestone and having a legacy to share with his children.
This historic opportunity is now postponed. Lilley, known as ‘Lights Out’, announced via social media that his fight with Fox is expected to be re-scheduled within a few months. The BKFC UK promoter attributed Fox’s withdrawal to unforeseen circumstances.
Instead of challenging for the 145-pound UK title against Fox, the former BKFC lightweight title challenger will compete at 155 pounds in a short-notice matchup. Josué Ekedi has stepped in as the new opponent for Lilley in a last-minute lightweight bout. This fight is confirmed for BKFC Fight Night Newcastle, taking place at Utilita Arena Newcastle on March 14th.
