Israel Adesanya Targets Sean Strickland Rematch This Fall

Sports news » Israel Adesanya Targets Sean Strickland Rematch This Fall

Israel Adesanya is looking for a rematch with Sean Strickland later this year.

2023 was a year of contrasts for Adesanya. He began by emphatically reclaiming the middleweight title, knocking out his rival Alex Pereira in a memorable performance at UFC 287, a victory later named Knockout of the Year. However, just five months later at UFC 293, he lost the belt in a dominant performance by Sean Strickland. Now, Adesanya is seeking redemption.

Speaking recently on the red carpet of the 2025 UFC Hall of Fame ceremony, where he was recognized for his classic 2019 bout against Kelvin Gastelum, Adesanya confirmed his desire to return to the octagon against Strickland, targeting a fight in September or October.

When asked about potentially facing Strickland again this autumn, Adesanya commented:

“I think he’s going through something. I haven’t really seen anything, but someone sent me a screenshot, like, ‘Oh, he’s fat now.’ I saw it and I was like, oh shit.”

He continued, reflecting on Strickland`s character:

“Sean’s a guy who definitely has a lot of old school stuff, trauma he has to deal with. We all go through shit. But for him, that’s easy. He should have just said something and start roasting me or whatever. That’s a Sean Strickland thing to do, but he’s been quiet.”

Adesanya then humorously added:

“Sean, it’s June, men’s mental health month. I hope you’re looking out for your mental health, and also looking out for your physical health. You fat bitch. [Laughs].”

Strickland, however, didn`t remain quiet for long. Shortly after Adesanya`s remarks, Strickland was involved in another controversial incident, storming the cage and punching a fighter who had taunted him after defeating a teammate at a Tuff-N-Uff event in Las Vegas. It remains unclear if Strickland will face a suspension from athletic commissions for this latest outburst, which could potentially complicate Adesanya`s plans for a fall rematch.
