Sports news » Hurricanes sign goaltender Frederik Andersen to one-year contract extension

The Carolina Hurricanes have solidified their goaltending situation for the upcoming season.

Goaltender Frederik Andersen has agreed to a one-year contract extension valued at $2.75 million, ensuring he remains with the team, as announced on Saturday.

Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky commented in a team statement, “Frederik has performed exceptionally well for us and ranks among the top 10 NHL goalies all-time in winning percentage. We are enthusiastic about him staying with the team for next season.”

Andersen, 35, played in 22 games for Carolina this past season, finishing with a record of 13 wins, 8 losses, and 1 overtime loss, alongside a 2.50 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage.

The 12-year NHL veteran began his career with the Anaheim Ducks, spent five seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and joined Carolina as a free agent in July 2021.

He was sidelined for 38 consecutive games last season after undergoing knee surgery in November.

The terms of the contract include potential performance bonuses totalling $250,000, tied to playing 35 games, reaching 40 games played, and making the conference finals should Andersen participate in at least half of the Hurricanes` playoff games.

It is anticipated that Andersen will share net duties with 25-year-old Pyotr Kochetkov, who placed fourth in the Calder Trophy voting and was named to the 2023-24 NHL All-Rookie Team.
