Sports news » Hurricanes Goaltender Frederik Andersen Injured During Game 4 Against Devils

Following a collision, New Jersey Devils forward Timo Meier forcefully hits Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen, leading to a review where no penalty was called. Pyotr Kochetkov subsequently took over for Andersen.

The Carolina Hurricanes will have to finish Game 4 against the New Jersey Devils without their starting netminder, Frederik Andersen.

Andersen was forced to leave the game partway through the second period after being involved in a collision with Devils forward Timo Meier.

The incident occurred when Meier`s skate appeared to get tangled with Andersen`s, and Meier also made contact with the goaltender`s head, causing Andersen to fall back into his own net.

Initially, Meier received a five-minute major penalty for the play. However, this penalty was rescinded after officials conducted a video review.

This wasn`t the first instance of a Devils player making contact with Andersen in the game; he had been slow to recover after forward Justin Dowling bumped him earlier in the first period.

Pyotr Kochetkov entered the game to replace Andersen in the Hurricanes` net. At the time Andersen left, Carolina was leading the game 3-1 and held a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-seven first-round playoff series.

Andersen began the post-season as Carolina`s primary starting goaltender. He recorded back-to-back wins in the series before the Hurricanes lost in double overtime in Game 3. The 35-year-old goaltender`s playoff statistics include a 1.48 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage.
