Nobody could have predicted that finish!
Game 3 of the series between the Edmonton Oilers and the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday night seemed destined for another overtime period, following the Oilers` 5-4 victory in the extra frame in Game 2.
Edmonton had just evened the score at 3-3 with only 3:02 left in the third period, courtesy of captain Connor McDavid`s goal.
However, as the final seconds ticked away, William Karlsson and Reilly Smith executed a stunning play in the dying moments that surprised everyone in the arena and watching at home.
Karlsson retrieved the puck behind the net and sent it to the front. Smith gathered it, skillfully drew Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner far out from his net, and then shot towards the vacated goal.
Leon Draisaitl, the hero of Game 2`s overtime win, unfortunately found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. With his stick on the ice, Smith`s shot deflected off it and crossed the goal line with an incredible 0.4 seconds remaining in the third period.
Following a brief video review, the officials confirmed the goal, securing a 4-3 victory for Vegas. This win marks their first in the series, reducing Edmonton`s lead to 2-1.
The dramatic finish sparked immediate reactions from across the hockey world.
