George McNeilly Appointed President of Golf Travel Writers of America
The Golf Travel Writers of America (GTWA) has announced a significant leadership transition, with George McNeilly stepping into the role of its new president. This appointment marks a new chapter for the esteemed professional organization.
GTWA serves as a vital community for media professionals—including writers, editors, broadcasters, and other content creators—who focus on golf destinations and the broader golf industry. Its core mission is to uphold the highest standards of journalism, facilitate the sharing of industry knowledge, and provide authentic, engaging coverage of golf experiences worldwide.
McNeilly emphasized the unique value of independent media members. “No press releases or agency content can match the credibility and authenticity of third-party working media members who have no vested interest in the success or failure of a golf course, resort, or sporting event,” he stated, underscoring the importance for members to respect the organization’s rich history and heritage.
Founded 21 years ago by Bruce Vittner and John Edwards, GTWA originated from a desire to create a dedicated forum for traveling golf writers. McNeilly acknowledges the rapid evolution of the media landscape, noting that many influential storytellers are now independent contributors rather than full-time employees. He highlighted the need for businesses seeking amplification to recognize the broad reach and dedication of GTWA members, especially given the decline in staff and budgets at traditional news organizations.
Membership in GTWA offers substantial benefits to qualified media professionals. These include access to a robust network of experienced peers, opportunities for professional collaboration and development, and enhanced visibility within a dedicated community. The organization also connects its members with key industry partners, tourism groups, and destinations. McNeilly likens GTWA’s role to a "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval" for those who travel and write about golf, a sport deeply cherished by its community.
Recent organizational updates have included a revision of bylaws and a simplified mission statement: "To inform and engage golf fans and participants with integrity wherever the sport is played, watched, attended, written about, or visited." While some members suggested a new name, the majority quickly reaffirmed the continued relevance of "Golf Travel Writers of America," especially as members now distribute content across a wider array of emerging platforms.
In a related development, incoming Vice President Alan Darty, publisher of Golf One Media, led a team in redesigning the association’s website, golftravelwriters.com. This revamped digital hub aims to better serve the evolving needs of its membership, which now encompasses broadcasters, podcasters, and credible influencers who share the organization’s mission. The executive committee also includes Dan Vukelich as Secretary and Joy Sarver as Treasurer, alongside a President Emeritus. The organization is headquartered in Orlando, Florida.
McNeilly brings a wealth of experience to his new role. For the past 14 years, he has taught Sports Business at Full Sail University, concurrently writing extensively about professional golf, related destinations, and products. Prior to this, he spent over a decade as a senior executive at ESPN, following a distinguished career as an award-winning multimedia broadcaster, producer, and writer. His extensive background includes covering four Olympic Games across three continents, 17 Super Bowls, and numerous major golf events.
Looking ahead, McNeilly expressed his vision for GTWA to be both "welcoming yet discerning." He emphasized the importance of acknowledging the diverse contributions of multimedia creators today, stating, "The word is continuing to spread. There are many opportunities for our members to add value to the audiences and stakeholders we serve.”
