CALGARY – From his couch, recovering captain Mikael Backlund observed his team`s recent games on TV and identified a pivotal moment that ignited their impressive streak.
Ten days prior, at Madison Square Garden, with the Flames holding a narrow 2-1 lead, Joel Hanley`s courageous headfirst dive to block a powerful shot from Braden Schneider perfectly exemplified the team`s selfless dedication.
“Our resilience has been crucial, we`ve stuck together and fought for each other,” noted Backlund, who has since returned to play.
“It began in New York when Hanley bravely blocked a shot. That play really set the tone for our road trip, with guys stepping up in various ways and performing exceptionally well.”
This pivotal block, thankfully hitting his shoulder, was instrumental in securing the first of four consecutive wins for the Flames. The 33-year-old veteran has earned widespread praise from his teammates and coaches for his contribution to the team`s improbable playoff chase.
Winning this way is challenging, but for the Flames, it’s their only path forward.
“You do whatever it takes to win,” coach Ryan Huska stated, emphasizing the team`s philosophy.
“We’ve talked a lot about how anyone can step up and be a game-changer each night. If you’re not ready, you might miss your chance. I believe the guys have embraced this. Whether we’re ahead or behind, we have to find ways to stay competitive.”
Four consecutive comeback victories, including a complete sweep in the New York area, highlighted their determination. Their strong offensive showing with 48 shots in a tough 5-2 loss to Dallas further demonstrated their effort, even if the result didn`t reflect it.
The team aims to capitalize on their momentum in Edmonton on Saturday against an injury-plagued Oilers team. They carry with them a strong work ethic and the belief that any player can become the hero on any given night.
This has been the Flames` approach throughout the season.
Nazem Kadri’s impressive seven goals in the past five games have been a major highlight, alongside strong performances from Jonathan Huberdeau and Matt Coronato.
Goaltending continues to be a vital component in keeping their playoff hopes alive.
Ultimately, it`s the collective effort that has kept this team within striking distance of St. Louis, just six points behind with three games in hand.
Hanley`s transformation from frequently being scratched to a regular top-four defenseman exemplifies the progress he and the team have made.
“I think as a team, we always believed in our potential, but we still had to prove it,” said Hanley, admitting he acted instinctively when blocking the shot in New York.
“Personally, I always believed in my abilities; I just needed to demonstrate them.”
The growing injury list and losses for the Oilers, combined with the Flames` positive momentum, confidence, and urgency, sets the stage for an exciting next chapter in their provincial rivalry.
It would likely take a trip back to the early 90s to find a Flames team entering Edmonton on a Saturday night as clear favorites.
