
Another member of the Calgary Flames roster will be participating in the upcoming world championships.
The Flames organization announced on Tuesday that their captain, Mikael Backlund, is set to represent Sweden on home ice for the tournament, which is scheduled to begin on May 9th.
Backlund recently concluded the 2024-25 season, having recorded 15 goals and a total of 32 points over 76 games played for Calgary.
The 36-year-old centre last skated for Team Sweden at the world championships in 2018. During that event, he served as the team captain, contributing two goals and nine points across 10 games, helping lead his country to a gold medal victory.
In his career to date, Backlund has accumulated 45 games of experience playing for Sweden`s senior national team.
Backlund will join several of his Flames teammates who are also continuing their seasons by playing internationally. This group includes MacKenzie Weegar representing Canada, Rasmus Andersson also playing for Sweden, Matt Coronato with the U.S. team, and Dan Vladar playing for Czechia. Additionally, rookie defenseman Zayne Parekh is expected to join Canada for their pre-tournament games.
