Ralf Schumacher Weighs In on Audi F1 Team Principal Search

Audi unexpectedly parted ways with its Team Principal, Jonathan Wheatley, between the Formula 1 races in China and Japan. Wheatley is leaving the Ingolstadt-based team after less than a year. Project leader Mattia Binotto has temporarily taken over the Briton's responsibilities until a potential successor is found.

The Italian is familiar with the Team Principal role from his tenure at Ferrari, where he led their Formula 1 team from 2019 to 2022. However, Ralf Schumacher issues a warning regarding this background. "Ultimately, he was only in Italy, and only at Ferrari," the expert noted.

"This means it's crucial to ensure he doesn't just recruit engineers from Italy, but genuinely looks internationally," Schumacher cautioned. Binotto needs to "think more internationally and perhaps find individuals who are currently with other teams."

"I'm curious to see how he manages this," stressed the former Formula 1 driver. While former Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley also spent over twenty years solely at Red Bull, Schumacher believes the Briton "would have had certain contacts that would have been very helpful."

Now, the onus is on Binotto to select the right personnel and potentially identify a new permanent Team Principal for Audi. One option Schumacher introduces into the discussion is Mike Krack. The Luxembourg-born Krack served as Team Principal at Aston Martin from 2022 to 2025 and possesses first-hand experience in this role.

Following a restructuring, however, Krack now functions primarily as the operational manager at the racetrack, officially known as 'Chief Trackside Officer'. "Mike Krack is certainly someone who demonstrably does a very strong technical job at Aston Martin," Schumacher praised.

Above all, the 54-year-old possesses "the core competence to, let's say casually, hold the group together," the expert added with a smile. "And that's genuinely not easy at Aston Martin. I don't know how satisfied or dissatisfied he is [at Aston Martin]."

However, Krack could be a valuable asset for Audi, as continuity and the ability to retain talent are key factors for success. A move from Krack to Audi wouldn't be entirely unrealistic either, considering the Luxembourger was already rumored as a potential Team Principal almost two years ago.

At that time, Andreas Seidel was still with Audi, or rather Sauber. Whether recruiting the Luxembourger could become a topic again under Binotto's leadership is debatable. However, Schumacher introduces another advantage for Mike Krack: "A German-speaking Team Principal makes sense."
