Epic Games has announced a substantial round of layoffs, resulting in more than a thousand employees losing their jobs. In a message sent to staff and subsequently published online, CEO Tim Sweeney explained the company’s decision, citing that Epic has been spending considerably more than it earns.
Sweeney attributed this financial imbalance to significant investments in the evolution of Fortnite, the scaling of Unreal Engine, the Epic Games Store, and its broader creator ecosystem. He acknowledged that while he had hoped to navigate this transition without layoffs, it became an unrealistic expectation. These job cuts, combined with over $500 million in savings achieved by freezing hiring, reducing marketing efforts, and closing open positions, are aimed at stabilizing the company’s financial standing.
Beyond Epic’s specific challenges, Sweeney also highlighted a tougher industry landscape. He pointed to slower overall growth, decreased consumer spending, and higher operating costs. Additionally, current-generation consoles are selling less than their predecessors, and games face increasing competition for player time against a growing array of other entertainment forms.
While Sweeney denied that these actions constituted a “rightsizing” – a term often used when a company corrects over-hiring – the considerable scale of the layoffs suggests that previous calculations may not have been entirely accurate to maintain balance. Moving forward, Epic Games will focus on sustaining Fortnite, which remains one of the world’s most popular games, and will prioritize the development of Unreal Engine 6, along with facilitating the transition from the widely used Unreal Engine 5.
