Sports news » Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Embodies UFC Legend Mark Kerr in ‘The Smashing Machine’ Trailer

The initial trailer for writer and director Benny Safdie`s new film, The Smashing Machine, offers a look at Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson`s complete transformation into the iconic UFC fighter Mark Kerr.

This highly anticipated movie, scheduled to debut in theaters on October 3rd, chronicles Kerr`s career path, from his triumphs as a two-time UFC tournament champion to his subsequent challenging period marked by addiction to painkillers and narcotics, resulting from numerous injuries sustained during his fighting and wrestling career.

The film is largely based on a 2002 documentary of the same title. That documentary followed Kerr from his highly successful stint in the UFC to seeking a fresh start in Japan with PRIDE FC. However, despite experiencing some initial success there, his struggles with addiction eventually overshadowed his career once more.

Oscar-nominated actress Emily Blunt takes on the role of Dawn Staples, Kerr`s ex-wife, who was a significant presence throughout the original documentary focusing on the fighter`s life.

Former Bellator heavyweight champion Ryan Bader is also featured in a key role, portraying UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman. Coleman, initially a rival to Kerr, later transitioned into a mentor figure as Kerr worked to get his career back on track. The documentary highlighted Kerr`s difficulties in reaching his previous heights in PRIDE, contrasting with Coleman`s own career resurgence, which included winning the first-ever PRIDE Heavyweight Grand Prix.

Boxing heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk depicts Igor Vovchanchyn, a legendary Russian fighter who faced Kerr in PRIDE. Additionally, Bas Rutten appears in the movie playing himself, reprising his prominent role from the original documentary.

The cast also includes appearances by other fighters such as James Moontasri, Satoshi Ishii, and Roberto ‘Cyborg’ Abreu.

Benny Safdie, known for his collaborative work with his brother Josh Safdie on acclaimed films like Uncut Gems, directs this movie, marking his solo directorial debut.

Get ready for The Smashing Machine to arrive in theaters nationwide on October 3rd.
