Merab Dvalishvili versus Sean O’Malley 2. Is this the rematch fight fans were eagerly anticipating? Perhaps not.
UFC 316 is set to feature this bantamweight title fight as its main attraction. The current champion, Dvalishvili, will defend his belt against O’Malley, the same opponent he defeated at UFC 306 last September to win the championship. During their previous encounter, Dvalishvili largely controlled the fight with his dominant wrestling. However, O’Malley claimed afterwards that he performed better than reflected in the judges` scores and has been pushing for a rematch ever since.
Following their first fight, Dvalishvili successfully defended his title against the previously undefeated contender, Umar Nurmagomedov. O’Malley, meanwhile, remained inactive, recovering from hip surgery. Now, O’Malley is granted his desired rematch against Dvalishvili on June 7 in Newark, New Jersey, without having to compete in another fight beforehand.
