After a significant tenure with the Anaheim Ducks, longtime goaltender John Gibson has been traded to the Detroit Red Wings. The team announced the move on Saturday, concluding Gibson`s 12 seasons with the Ducks organization.
In exchange for Gibson, the Ducks acquired goaltender Petr Mrazek, a second-round pick in 2027, and a fourth-round pick in 2026.
In his 29 appearances last season, the 31-year-old Pittsburgh native posted an 11-11-2 record with a .912 save percentage and a 2.77 goals-against average. These statistics marked his best performance levels since the 2018-19 season.
Petr Mrazek, who is 33 years old, joins the Ducks. He has a career record of 180-176-40 across 428 NHL games with a 2.85 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage, having played for Carolina, Philadelphia, Toronto, Chicago, and Detroit.
Originally drafted by the Ducks in the second round of the 2011 draft, Gibson debuted in the 2013-14 season. He became a mainstay in the Anaheim crease, appearing in 500 games for the team despite facing various injuries over the years.
He has two years remaining on his current contract, carrying an annual average value (AAV) of $6.4 million.
This trade aligns with the Ducks` ongoing youth movement. The move appears to position 24-year-old Lukas Dostal to step into the role of the primary goaltender. Anaheim currently sits 12th in the Western Conference standings with a 54-54 record, well outside of playoff contention.
