Despite returning to the win column, Devin Haney`s recent performance against Jose Ramirez felt far from a definitive victory.
Haney`s return bout on Friday night, his first since the controversial loss-turned-no-contest against Ryan Garcia in 2024, saw him square off against former unified light welterweight champion Jose Ramirez. This fight was featured as the second main card bout on the “Fatal Fury: City of Wolves” card, originally intended to build momentum for a potential rematch with Garcia. However, Haney`s unanimous decision win in what was described as a “historically bad fight” has likely diminished public demand for such a follow-up.
From the opening bell, both fighters, particularly Haney, appeared highly cautious and reluctant to engage. The contest was marked by extreme inactivity, with minimal punches thrown by either man. It came close to setting a record for the fewest punches attempted in a 12-round fight, with Haney reportedly throwing only 224 punches throughout the entire bout. While Haney ultimately secured the victory on the judges` scorecards (119-109, 119-109, 118-110) by being slightly less inactive than Ramirez in a largely inactive contest, his performance failed to generate excitement or win over new fans. Interest in a Garcia rematch was reportedly so low following the fight that the broadcast opted not to conduct a post-fight interview with Haney.
