Following the Rangers` defeat, the Devils are guaranteed to finish no lower than third in the Metropolitan Division.
With the Washington Capitals securing first place in the division, the Devils are set to compete against the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the playoffs. The Devils are currently seven points behind the Hurricanes, who are in second place, with only four games remaining. To gain home-ice advantage for the first round, the Devils would need to win all of their remaining games and hope for the Hurricanes to lose.
New Jersey becomes the seventh team from the Eastern Conference to confirm their playoff participation. The Montreal Canadiens are currently in a strong position to claim the eighth and final playoff spot in the conference.
