BROSSARD, Quebec — It was noted during Monday`s game that as Ivan Demidov was showcasing his talent in his NHL debut, Juraj Slafkovsky was simultaneously playing his best hockey in recent weeks.

Whether Slafkovsky acknowledges it or not, this was likely not a coincidence.

The Canadiens forward could argue that he was due for a strong performance, especially after publicly stating his dissatisfaction with his recent play.

“I feel I can still contribute more,” Slafkovsky mentioned on April 8. “This part of the season is a new experience for me. I feel like I’m learning because last year at this time, our season was over. Now, the stakes are higher. I believe I can elevate my game. My last few games haven`t been up to my standards, but I hope to improve tonight.”

However, these comments were made before Slafkovsky delivered an average performance against the Detroit Red Wings, followed by two of his least effective games of late.

So, what was the catalyst for change on Monday?

Demidov. That’s the answer.

As the 19-year-old Demidov traveled to Toronto while the Canadiens were in Ottawa on Friday, Slafkovsky, 21, was asked about the potential impact of Demidov`s arrival on the team.

Slafkovsky, being media-savvy, understood the underlying question: how would Demidov`s arrival motivate him to perform at his peak?

“I think it’s positive. More talented players increase competition,” Slafkovsky stated. “You are driven to make better plays and contribute more to the team to maintain your position. Ultimately, it benefits everyone.”

Demidov`s presence in the press box during Saturday`s game against the Maple Leafs didn`t seem to have the same immediate effect. Perhaps his influence was less direct while not actively on the ice.

However, it was clear that Demidov`s debut had a noticeable impact on Slafkovsky’s performance against the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday.
