Las Vegas – The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has officially announced the induction of former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson into the Modern Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame, as part of its Class of 2026. The induction ceremony is slated for this upcoming summer.
UFC President and CEO Dana White lauded Johnson, stating, “Demetrious Johnson stands as the greatest flyweight in history.” White highlighted Johnson’s exceptional career in mixed martial arts, emphasizing his astonishing record of 11 consecutive title defenses, a feat he described as “one of the most remarkable records we’ve ever seen in professional sports.” White expressed his honor in welcoming Johnson into the Hall of Fame this summer.
Johnson will join the Modern Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame as its 18th inductee. This category is reserved for athletes who began their professional careers on or after November 17, 2000, coinciding with the inaugural UFC event governed by the unified rules of MMA. Additional criteria for this wing include a minimum age of 35 or at least one year of retirement from the sport.
Throughout his 14-year MMA career, which spanned 30 professional bouts, Johnson amassed an impressive record of 25 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw (17-3, 1 draw within UFC/WEC). His notable victories include wins against former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres, ex-RIZIN flyweight champion Kyoji Horiguchi, former two-division UFC champion Henry Cejudo, and former Pancrase flyweight tournament victor Yuya Wakamatsu.
Following a flawless amateur record of nine consecutive wins across multiple promotions, Johnson launched his professional career on August 15, 2009. He marked his debut with a submission victory at King of the Cage: Thunderstruck. Subsequently, he competed in the Alaska Fighting Championship, securing two more wins before transitioning to World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).
Johnson’s WEC debut occurred on the preliminary card of WEC 48: ALDO vs. FABER on April 24, 2010, at ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California. Although he lost his debut bout to Brad Pickett by decision, he swiftly recovered, winning his subsequent four fights across both WEC and UFC. This impressive run earned him his first championship opportunity against the reigning champion, Dominick Cruz.
On October 1, 2011, Johnson challenged Cruz in the main event of UFC LIVE: CRUZ vs. JOHNSON at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Cruz successfully defended his title, defeating Johnson via unanimous decision.
Following a draw against Ian McCall in his subsequent fight, Johnson decisively won their rematch via unanimous decision. This victory propelled him to the UFC flyweight tournament finale, where he was set to face Joseph Benavidez at UFC 152.
At UFC 152: JONES vs. BELFORT, held on September 22, 2012, at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Johnson competed against Benavidez in the co-main event. He secured a split decision victory, thereby becoming the first-ever UFC flyweight champion.
His reign as UFC flyweight champion saw Johnson embark on an unprecedented winning streak, achieving 11 consecutive victories and title defenses over four years. This remarkable run cemented his legacy as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time.
On August 4, 2018, his five-year undefeated streak in the UFC concluded when he lost a split decision to Henry Cejudo in the co-main event of UFC 227: DILLASHAW vs. GARBRANDT 2.
Subsequent to this defeat, Johnson departed the UFC and joined ONE Championship, a Singapore-based MMA promotion. There, he achieved five victories in six bouts, claiming the flyweight world grand prix title and becoming the organization’s flyweight champion, which he successfully defended once. His retirement from active competition was announced on May 5, 2023, at which point he vacated his title following another successful defense.
